Yellowhorn, Xanthoceras sorbifolium, is a unique and highly ornamental tree or large shrub, distinguished by its stunning white flowers with red centres that bloom in late spring.

Originating from China, this deciduous species is prized in UK gardens for its adaptability, moderate size, and the spectacular display of blossoms that attract pollinators. Yellowhorn thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, making it suitable for a variety of landscape settings.

Beyond its floral appeal, the tree produces nuts, adding a functional aspect to its ornamental value. It is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to introduce an exotic touch to their outdoor spaces, as it remains relatively uncommon in cultivation.

With a growth habit that can be shaped into a single trunk or multi-stemmed form, Yellowhorn offers flexibility in garden design. Its leaves turn a lovely yellow in autumn, providing seasonal interest.

Natural Germination: Xanthoceras sorbifolium seeds typically do not require a period of cold stratification to break dormancy. Sow in Spring when the weather starts to warm.

Artificial Stratification: For controlled germination, soak the seeds in water, then mix the seeds with a moist substrate and plant out, germination should occur at about 15C.

Additionally, Xanthoceras sorbifolium seeds have a hard outer shell, so it’s beneficial to slightly scarify the seeds before stratification. This can be done by gently rubbing the seeds with sandpaper or nicking the seed coat with a knife, being careful not to damage the inner seed. This scarification helps water and air penetrate the seed coat, aiding in the germination process.
