Japanese Elm – Zelkova serrata is a truly magnificent tree that brings a touch of Eastern elegance to British gardens. Its graceful vase-shaped crown and beautiful bark make it a standout choice for any garden setting.

The tree puts on a brilliant show throughout the year. In spring, the fresh lime-green leaves emerge, creating a soft, welcoming canopy. These leaves are serrated and elm-like, turning to a deep green in summer, providing lovely dappled shade below. The autumn display is particularly special, with leaves changing to stunning shades of yellow, orange and russet red.

One of the most appealing features is its attractive bark, which peels in subtle patches to reveal orange-brown patches beneath the grey outer layer. As the tree matures, this bark pattern becomes more pronounced, adding winter interest when the leaves have fallen.

Despite its exotic origins, this tree is perfectly suited to British gardens. It’s remarkably tough and adaptable, handling both urban pollution and varying soil types with ease. It’s also resistant to Dutch elm disease, making it a brilliant alternative to our native elms.

The Japanese Elm grows at a steady pace and can be easily maintained at a manageable garden size through light pruning. It works brilliantly as a focal point in lawns, provides lovely dappled shade for seating areas, and fits wonderfully in both traditional and modern garden designs.
