Japanese Maple Acer ‘Beni Sazanami’ 20/40cm (3L)

‘Beni Sazanami’, apparently meaning ‘Red Ruffles’ in Japanese, perfectly describes this charming maple’s most distinctive feature – its deeply cut, ruffled leaves that dance in the slightest breeze.

The tree puts on a magnificent display throughout the seasons. In spring, the new leaves emerge in bright, vivid red, creating a stunning first flush of colour. As summer arrives, the foliage develops pronounced green veining against the red background, adding depth and interest to its appearance.

The small, heavily serrated leaves give this tree a delicate, almost lace-like appearance. Each leaf looks like a tiny work of art, with deep cuts and rippling edges that catch the light beautifully. Come autumn, the foliage transforms into brilliant red shades for a final seasonal flourish.

This variety stays naturally compact, making it perfect for today’s smaller gardens. It’s particularly suited to container growing, where its architectural form and detailed leaves can be appreciated up close. Its manageable size also makes it an excellent choice for bonsai enthusiasts.

‘Beni Sazanami’ shows good heat tolerance, making it more resilient than many Japanese maples during warm summers. It grows well in dappled shade or morning sun, preferring a sheltered spot away from strong winds.

The tree’s upright habit and refined appearance make it ideal for courtyard gardens, patios, or as a feature in Asian-inspired garden designs. It also works beautifully in mixed borders where its distinctive foliage can contrast with other plants.
