This small, deciduous tree is a visual feast, boasting deeply dissected leaves that emerge in spring with a vibrant and intricate variegation of pink, cream, and green.
As the growing season unfolds, the foliage undergoes a mesmerising transformation, developing deeper tones of red and purple that intermingle with the existing colours. With its compact growth habit and stunning year-round appeal, ‘Extravaganza’ is an ideal choice for smaller gardens, containers, or as a standout specimen in larger landscapes.
Plant Acer palmatum ‘Extravaganza’ in well-draining, slightly acidic soil in a sheltered position with dappled shade or protection from harsh afternoon sun. Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods, ensuring consistent moisture without waterlogging. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune minimally in late winter if necessary, as excessive pruning can spoil the natural shape. Protect from late spring frosts and strong winds which can damage the delicate foliage. Feed with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring.
