Japanese Maple Acer ‘Hino-tori nishiki’ 20/40cm (3L)

‘Hino-tori nishiki’, meaning ‘Fire Bird’ in Japanese, lives up to its name with its extraordinary seasonal colour displays.

The palmate leaves, divided into seven graceful tapering lobes, emerge in spring wearing bright reddish-pink to apricot tones that create a magical spring display. As summer approaches, the foliage transitions to pale green and then apple green, retaining subtle pink margins that add depth and interest.

Throughout summer, flushes of deep pink new growth appear among the established leaves, creating a delightful two-tone effect. The autumn finale is particularly special, with the foliage transforming into a delicate blend of oranges, pinks, and reds.

This is a vigorous variety, reaching approximately 10 feet high by 8 feet wide in 10 years, making it perfect for creating impact in medium-sized gardens. Its natural growth habit forms an attractive, well-balanced shape that needs minimal pruning.

‘Hino-tori nishiki’ performs well in moderate to full sun positions, showing better colour development than many Japanese maples in brighter locations. It’s particularly effective when positioned where morning or evening light can illuminate its colourful foliage.

The tree’s size and spectacular colour changes make it perfect as a focal point in borders or lawns, where its seasonal transformations can be fully appreciated. It’s also excellent for adding height and structure to mixed planting schemes.
