‘Seiryu’ stands apart from other dissected Japanese maples with its distinctive upright, vase-shaped growth habit, making it a truly special addition to any garden.
Unlike the typical weeping form of dissected maples, this variety grows in an elegant columnar shape that gradually broadens with age to create a rounded crown. This unique growth habit combines the delicate beauty of dissected leaves with architectural upright form.
The deeply cut, lacy foliage emerges in spring as bright lime green, creating a fresh, vibrant display. Through summer, the leaves mature to a rich mid-green, sometimes developing subtle red tints that add depth and interest. The autumn finale is particularly spectacular, with foliage transforming into a brilliant mix of golden-orange, purple, and red tones.
Growing to approximately 4 metres in height and spread over 20 years, ‘Seiryu’ develops a beautifully balanced form that makes it perfect as a specimen tree or focal point. Its moderate size suits both small and large gardens.
Small red flowers in spring add subtle interest, while the tree’s upright habit creates wonderful opportunities for underplanting with shade-loving perennials.
This variety combines the best attributes of Japanese maples – delicate foliage, stunning autumn colour, and elegant form – with unique upright growth that sets it apart from all other dissected varieties.
