‘Shaina’, developed in the 1990s, brings the dramatic colour impact of larger red maples to a more compact, garden-friendly form.

The show begins in spring when deeply divided leaves emerge in vibrant bright red, creating an eye-catching early season display. As summer progresses, the foliage deepens to a rich dark ruby red that holds its colour well through the warmer months. The autumn finale sees the leaves transform to striking crimson tones.

This variety naturally forms a dense, slightly columnar shape, growing slowly to reach 2.5-4 metres in 20 years. Its compact, upright habit makes it perfect for smaller gardens or situations where vertical accent is desired without overwhelming the space.

‘Shaina’ inherits the best qualities of its parent ‘Bloodgood‘ but in a more condensed form, making it ideal for modern gardens where space might be limited but impact is desired.

Like all Japanese maples, ‘Shaina’ performs best in sheltered positions with partial shade or sun, thriving in acid to neutral soils. Its reliable colour performance and manageable size make it an excellent choice for both containers and garden planting.

This variety is particularly valuable for creating focal points in smaller gardens or adding vertical structure to mixed borders where its consistent red colouration provides year-round interest.
