‘Sumi-nagashi’, named after the ancient Japanese art of marbling with its bold, flowing colours, brings dramatic impact to any garden setting.
The tree initially develops a distinctive vase shape in youth, with branches that may weep slightly at the ends. As it matures, it gradually broadens to create a more spreading form, potentially reaching 15-20 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide at maturity.
The deeply cut palmate leaves (up to 4 inches long) feature seven (occasionally nine) elongated-ovate lobes with toothed margins and pointed tips. The foliage emerges purple-red in spring, deepens to rich maroon in summer, and transforms to brilliant crimson in autumn.
This fast-growing cultivar is notably vigorous for a Japanese maple, typically achieving 8-10 feet in its first decade. Small reddish flowers appear in spring, followed by paired samaras in autumn that add additional seasonal interest.
Its bold coloration and strong growth rate make it an excellent choice for creating quick impact in gardens. The changing form from youth to maturity adds long-term interest as the tree develops its character over time.
‘Sumi-nagashi’ combines the refined elegance of Japanese maples with robust growth and reliable colour performance, making it perfect for gardeners seeking dramatic impact with classical appeal.
