Uki-gumo’ brings an almost dreamlike quality to the garden with its exceptional variegated foliage and elegant form.

This slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree develops a compact, upright habit with distinctive horizontal branching that creates winter interest. Growing to approximately 3-4 metres in height and spread, it maintains a bushy, well-balanced form perfect for featured positions.

The five-lobed, slightly twisted leaves create a fascinating display beginning in spring, when they emerge predominantly white with delicate pink tips and shading. As the season progresses, the foliage develops into a beautiful mosaic of green heavily mottled with white and pink edges. Individual leaves show varying degrees of variegation, with some appearing almost pure white or pink, while others display intricate patterns.

The autumn finale sees the leaves transform into vibrant yellow-orange and rich peach-red tones before falling, providing a dramatic seasonal conclusion.

‘Uki-gumo’ performs best in partial shade and sheltered positions, where its delicate foliage can develop full variegation without scorching. Its moderate size and stunning foliage make it perfect for containers or as a featured specimen in smaller gardens.

This variety combines the refined elegance of Japanese maples with extraordinary variegation that creates a unique floating cloud effect in the garden.
