‘Uki-gumo’ – translated as floating clouds creates an enchanting garden presence with its stunning variegated foliage and graceful architecture.
Developing into a compact tree of 3-4 metres, this slow-growing Japanese maple forms an upright, bushy shape with eye-catching horizontal branches that provide attractive winter structure. Its balanced form makes it ideal for prominent garden positions.
Spring unveils a magical display as the five-lobed leaves emerge predominantly white, adorned with soft pink tips. These slightly twisted leaves mature into an intricate tapestry where green, white, and pink combine in endless patterns – each leaf telling its own story through varying degrees of variegation.
As autumn approaches, the foliage transforms into a warm palette of yellow-orange and peach-red tones, offering one final spectacular show before winter.
Thriving in sheltered, partially shaded locations, ‘Uki-gumo’ develops its best variegation away from harsh sunlight. Its manageable size suits both container growing and smaller garden spaces, where it can be appreciated as a stunning specimen plant.
This exceptional maple earns its name ‘Floating Clouds’ through the ethereal effect created by its delicately variegated foliage, bringing a touch of poetry to any garden setting.
