The Japanese Maple ‘Ukigumo’ is a truly special small tree that brings outstanding beauty to any garden. Its name means ‘floating clouds’ in Japanese, perfectly describing its gorgeous variegated leaves. The small palm-shaped leaves emerge in spring with a lovely pink flush, developing into a stunning mix of white and green marbling. In autumn, the leaves turn brilliant shades of orange and red before falling. This maple grows slowly into a small, well-shaped tree that rarely reaches more than 2.5 metres tall, making it perfect for smaller gardens or growing in pots.

The delicate branches create a lovely arching shape that looks wonderful all year round. These maples are hugely popular with gardeners who want to add a touch of Japanese garden style to their space. They work brilliantly in oriental-style gardens, but are just as happy in modern or traditional settings. The ‘Ukigumo’ variety is particularly sought after for its unusual variegated leaves, which look stunning against darker foliage plants.

These maples need a sheltered spot away from strong winds and harsh afternoon sun. They grow best in slightly acidic, well-drained soil that stays moist but never waterlogged. A good layer of mulch around the base helps keep roots cool and moist. In pots, use ericaceous compost and make sure there’s good drainage. Water regularly during the growing season, especially in dry spells. A yearly feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring will keep your maple healthy. Little pruning is needed – just remove any dead or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when the tree is dormant.

Please note, Maple Acers are deciduous. If you are purchasing in late Autumn and Winter, there will be no leaves on these trees.
