The Japanese Maple Acer palmatum brings elegant beauty to gardens with its stunning leaf colours. These 60/80cm trees offer a perfect blend of purple and green foliage that changes through the seasons. In spring, the new leaves emerge in rich purple tones, some leaves developing with striking green variegation.

The delicate, palm-shaped leaves create a natural artwork against the sky. Each leaf is finely cut, moving gently in the breeze and casting beautiful shadows. By autumn, the display intensifies as the leaves turn brilliant shades of crimson and scarlet.

Growing slowly to form a naturally elegant shape, these maples typically reach just 2-3 metres in height. Their compact size makes them perfect for small gardens or growing in large containers. The branches spread gracefully to create an attractive dome shape.

Perfect as a focal point or feature tree, Japanese Maples bring a touch of oriental garden style to any space. The contrast between purple and green in the leaves creates year-round interest, especially when backlit by morning or evening sun.

A real mix of both colours gives the best of both worlds.

Plant your Japanese Maple in a sheltered spot protected from strong winds. They thrive in slightly acidic, well-drained soil and appreciate some shade during the hottest part of the day. Water regularly but don’t waterlog – they dislike sitting in wet soil. Apply a mulch in spring to retain moisture and keep roots cool. Light pruning in late winter if needed.
