The Japanese have been growing maples as bonsai for centuries, and this purple-leaved variety is among the most sought-after for its striking appearance and natural suitability for the art form.

These young bonsai starters come established in a shallow training tray, ready for you to begin shaping. The Purple Dissectum Maple has particularly fine attributes for bonsai culture. Its naturally dwarf habit and slow growth make it easier to manage, while the delicate, deeply-cut purple foliage creates the perfect miniature tree effect.

The leaves emerge in spring with a rich purple colour that holds well through summer, especially when positioned in good light. In autumn, they put on a brilliant show, turning to vibrant crimson before falling. Even in winter, the delicate branching structure creates an attractive silhouette.

These young trees respond well to training techniques, making them ideal for both beginners and more experienced bonsai enthusiasts. The flexible young branches can be wired and shaped easily, and the tree takes well to pruning, allowing you to develop your desired style over time.

Despite their delicate appearance, these maples are quite robust when given basic care. They thrive in the British climate, though they appreciate some shelter from harsh winds. The shallow bonsai tray helps maintain the compact root system needed for proper bonsai development.

Keeping your maple bonsai outdoors in a sheltered spot will help it develop natural seasonal rhythms. Regular watering and occasional feeding during the growing season will keep it healthy and vigorous.
