The Sugar Maple – Acer saccharum is a majestic deciduous tree, celebrated for its vibrant autumn foliage and its significant contribution to syrup production.
Native to the hardwood forests of North America, it is highly prized in gardens for its adaptability, stately growth and stunning seasonal colour transitions. The leaves of the Sugar Maple turn a brilliant array of colours in autumn, from bright yellow to burnt orange and deep red, creating a spectacular display.
This tree thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. Growing to a height of up to 40 meters, the Sugar Maple is not only an ornamental delight but also provides valuable shade and habitat for wildlife.
With its slow to moderate growth rate and impressive longevity, it makes a splendid choice for garden designs aiming for lasting beauty and stature. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Sugar Maple’s sap is the primary source of maple syrup, adding a cultural and functional value to its presence in any garden or landscape.
