The Cedar of Lebanon – Cedrus libani is a tree of legendary status, its history intertwined with ancient civilisations. This slow-growing conifer, when given the luxury of time and space, can evolve into a truly spectacular specimen, potentially reaching impressive heights of 35 metres or more. Its horizontal branches form the characteristic flat-topped layers that create the tree’s iconic silhouette. The needles, short and deep green, grow densely along the branches, giving the tree a lush, textured appearance that remains attractive throughout the year.
In its youth, the Cedar of Lebanon exhibits a pyramidal shape, but as it ages, it develops the celebrated flat-topped crown that has made it a favourite in stately gardens and parks. Come autumn, large upright cones emerge prominently on the upper branches. These cones require several years to mature before naturally breaking apart on the tree to release their seeds.
This tree is not only visually impressive but also remarkably resilient. Once established, it demonstrates excellent drought tolerance and stands firm against strong winds. It serves as a valuable resource for wildlife, offering shelter to various birds and small mammals. While its timber has long been valued for its durability and pleasant aroma, these trees are now primarily cultivated for their ornamental qualities and historical significance.
