Cedar of Lebanon Trees
Cedrus libani
The Cedar of Lebanon – Cedrus libani is a tree steeped in history and grandeur. Native to the eastern Mediterranean, this magnificent conifer can reach heights of 40 metres or more, developing a distinctive flat-topped crown in maturity that has made it an icon in grand landscapes. Its branches grow horizontally in wide-spreading tiers, creating a layered effect that’s truly spectacular.
The needles are dark green and densely packed, giving the tree a rich, textured appearance throughout the year. In autumn, large upright cones appear on the upper branches, taking two years to mature before falling apart on the tree to release their seeds.
The Cedar of Lebanon is more than just visually impressive; it’s also remarkably resilient once established, tolerating drought and exposure to wind. It provides excellent habitat for wildlife, offering shelter and nesting sites for birds and small mammals. While slow-growing, its potential lifespan of several centuries means it can become a living monument in the landscape, growing more majestic with each passing decade.
