The Cedar of Lebanon – Cedrus libani is a truly awe-inspiring tree with roots in ancient history. This slow-growing conifer can, with patience and ample space, develop into a magnificent specimen, potentially soaring to heights of 35 metres or beyond. Its branches extend horizontally, forming the iconic flat-topped layers that give mature trees their unmistakable silhouette. The needles, short and dark green, cluster densely on the branches, providing the tree with a captivating texture year-round.

In its early years, the Cedar of Lebanon presents a more pyramidal shape, but as it matures, it develops the renowned flat-topped crown that has made it a staple in grand gardens and parks. Autumn brings large, upright cones that stand proudly on the upper branches. These cones take several years to mature before disintegrating on the tree to release their seeds.

This tree isn’t just visually striking – it’s also remarkably resilient. Once established, it demonstrates excellent drought tolerance and wind resistance. It’s a valuable asset for wildlife, offering shelter to birds and small mammals. While its timber is prized for durability and fragrance, these trees are now primarily cultivated for their ornamental value rather than timber production.
