The Cedar of Lebanon – Cedrus libani is a tree of exceptional grandeur, steeped in history and mythology. This slow-growing conifer, given time and ample space, can develop into a truly magnificent specimen, potentially reaching heights of 35 metres or more. Its branches spread horizontally, creating the iconic tiered layers that give mature trees their distinctive silhouette. The needles, short and dark green, cluster densely on the branches, providing the tree with a rich, textured appearance throughout the year.

In its youth, the Cedar of Lebanon displays a more pyramidal form, but as it ages, it develops the famous flat-topped crown that has made it a favourite in grand gardens and parks. Autumn brings large, upright cones that stand prominently on the upper branches. These cones take several years to mature before naturally disintegrating on the tree to release their seeds.

This tree is not only visually impressive but also remarkably resilient. Once established, it demonstrates excellent drought tolerance and wind resistance. It plays a vital role in supporting wildlife, offering valuable shelter for birds and small mammals. While historically prized for its durable and fragrant timber, today these trees are primarily cultivated for their ornamental value and historical significance, serving as living monuments in landscapes across the country.
