The Columnar Lawson Cypress, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Columnaris’, is a striking evergreen conifer that brings architectural elegance to gardens and landscapes. This cultivar of the Lawson Cypress is prized for its narrow, columnar growth habit, which creates a strong vertical accent in any setting. The tree is characterized by its dense, upright branches clothed in soft, scale-like foliage that ranges from blue-green to grey-green in color. This fine texture gives the tree a graceful, almost feathery appearance despite its rigid form. The foliage is arranged in flattened sprays, which overlap to create a compact, uniform surface that maintains its shape without the need for regular pruning.
Columnar Lawson Cypress typically grows to heights of 8-12 metres, with a spread of only 1-1.5 metres, making it an excellent choice for narrow spaces or as a vertical element in garden design. Its slow to moderate growth rate means it maintains its slender shape over time, requiring minimal maintenance to keep its attractive form.
One of the most appealing aspects of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Columnaris’ is its year-round interest. The consistent colour and texture of its foliage provide a stable backdrop for other plantings throughout the seasons. In spring, tiny inconspicuous flowers appear, followed by small, round cones that add subtle detail to the overall appearance of the tree.
For those interested in creating structure and year-round interest in their gardens, the Columnar Lawson Cypress is an excellent choice. Its narrow form allows for the introduction of vertical elements without overwhelming smaller spaces, and its evergreen nature ensures consistent colour and texture throughout the year.
If you’re after a tree that offers architectural impact, low maintenance, and adaptability to various conditions, the Columnar Lawson Cypress is an excellent choice. It can be a valuable asset in both formal and informal garden designs, bringing a touch of elegance and structure to a variety of landscapes.
If you’re after a tree that offers year-round structure, elegant form, and low maintenance requirements, Lawson’s Cypress ‘Columnaris’ is an excellent choice. It can be a valuable asset in both traditional and contemporary garden designs, bringing a touch of evergreen sophistication to a variety of landscapes.Caring for Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Columnaris’ is relatively straightforward. Plant it in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils but can adapt to a range of soil types as long as they’re not waterlogged. Water regularly when first planted to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant but will appreciate deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Fertilisation is generally not necessary unless the soil is particularly poor. Pruning is minimal – remove any dead or damaged branches as needed, but avoid heavy pruning as this can disrupt the tree’s natural columnar form.
