Chamaecyparis obtusa is often known as Hinoki cypress or Japanese cypress. Among its many cultivars, ‘Kosteri’ is a favourite sprawling bush with a conical habit
‘Kosteri’ sometimes named ‘Nana Kosteri’ is often bought for its glossy dark green foliage on unusually twisted branches ans wide sitting habit.
‘Kosteri’ grows slowly and is fairly compact in size, reaching 2.5 meters in height.
Like other Chamaecyparis obtusa varieties, ‘Kosteri’ likes well-drained soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types as long as they don’t retain excessive moisture. While it can thrive in full sun, it also does well in partial shade.
Thanks to its ability to stay small, ‘Kosteri’ is a favourite for accentuating rock gardens, borders, or even as a stand-alone specimen in a pot or container.
‘Kosteri’ rarely requires pruning due to its slow growth rate. Regular watering is essential during its early years and in prolonged dry spells, but it’s essential not to let the plant sit in soggy soil.
Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Kosteri’ is hardy when mature and can withstand cold temperatures down to -20C.
