Purple Beech – Fagus sylvatica ‘Purpurea’ is a majestic tree that brings rich colour to gardens throughout the growing season. The leaves emerge in spring with a bright copper-purple flush, deepening to a sultry dark purple as summer progresses. This stunning foliage creates magnificent contrast against green plants and provides welcome shade beneath. It grows into a broad, spreading tree with smooth grey bark that adds winter interest. The purple colour holds well even in shade, though it’s most intense in full sun. Autumn brings a spectacular display as the leaves turn coppery-brown, many staying on the tree through winter. Young trees grow quite quickly, developing the classic broad beech crown that makes such a wonderful garden feature. Though it can become large with age, regular pruning can maintain a more manageable size.

Plant your Purple Beech in any well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, though the best purple colour develops in full sun. It adapts to most soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water thoroughly in the first two growing seasons until established. After that, it only needs watering during prolonged dry spells. Add a layer of mulch in spring, keeping it away from the trunk. If you need to control the size, prune in late summer rather than winter or early spring when the tree may ‘bleed’ sap.
