The European Larch brings unique seasonal changes to gardens. Unlike most conifers, this elegant tree drops its needles in winter, but not before putting on a spectacular autumn show of bright golden yellow. In spring, the fresh lime-green needles emerge soft and feathery, creating a light, airy effect.
Small pink-purple cones appear in spring, standing upright on the branches like tiny roses. These mature to brown and remain decorative through winter when the branches are bare. The distinctive tiered branches grow in a natural pyramid shape, with a straight central trunk.
The bark develops wonderful character as it ages, becoming deeply fissured and taking on warm brown tones. Birds love to nest in its branches, and the winter silhouette shows off the graceful architecture of the tree against the sky.
Though it grows quite quickly, the Larch has a light, elegant presence that doesn’t overwhelm a garden. Each season brings something different – from spring’s fresh growth to summer’s gentle green, autumn’s gold and winter’s sculptural form.
Plant your Larch in full sun or light shade in any well-drained soil. It’s very hardy and copes well with cold but prefers not to sit in wet ground. Once established, it needs little attention beyond removing any dead wood in late winter. The tree naturally sheds its needles in autumn – this is normal and creates good mulch beneath.
