Photinia × fraseri ‘Carré Rouge’ is a standout shrub that brings a splash of colour to UK gardens throughout the year. This evergreen plant is a real head-turner, thanks to its striking red new growth that appears in spring and summer. The name ‘Carré Rouge’ means ‘red square’ in French, aptly describing the shape and colour of its young leaves.

As a compact variety, ‘Carré Rouge’ typically grows to about 1.5–2.5 metres tall and wide, making it perfect for smaller gardens or urban spaces. Its bushy habit makes it ideal for hedging, screens, or as a focal point in mixed borders. The new leaves emerge in a brilliant shade of red, creating a stunning contrast against the mature, glossy dark green foliage.

In late spring, clusters of small white flowers appear, adding another layer of interest to this already eye-catching plant. While not as showy as the foliage, these blooms are popular with pollinators. They’re followed by small red berries in autumn, which birds enjoy.

‘Carré Rouge’ is valued in UK gardens for its versatility and year-round appeal. It’s particularly useful in areas where you want to create privacy or block unsightly views, as its dense growth habit provides excellent screening. The bright red new growth also makes it a great choice for adding colour to predominantly green garden schemes.

This Photinia is relatively low-maintenance and adapts well to different soil types, though it prefers slightly acidic conditions. It’s fairly hardy and can withstand UK winters in most areas, though it may need some protection in very cold regions.

Regular pruning not only keeps the plant in shape but also encourages more of the bright red new growth that makes this shrub so distinctive. Whether used as a hedge, part of a mixed border, or as a standalone specimen, Photinia × fraseri ‘Carré Rouge’ brings vibrant colour and structure to UK gardens all year round.

Plant ‘Carré Rouge’ in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. Prune in late spring after the new growth has hardened off to maintain shape and encourage bushiness. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and mulch to retain moisture.
