Pieris japonica ‘Mountain Fire’ is a real showstopper in UK gardens. This evergreen shrub gets its name from the brilliant red colour of its new growth, which looks like flames licking up through the plant. It’s a sight that stops people in their tracks!

‘Mountain Fire’ typically grows to about 1-1.5 metres tall and wide over 10 years. It’s a slow grower, which makes it great for smaller gardens or containers. The plant starts its yearly show in early spring. New leaves emerge in a bright, fire-engine red. As they mature, they change to pink, then to a deep, glossy green. This colour change happens over several weeks, giving you a long period of interest.

Just when you think the show is over, ‘Mountain Fire’ has another trick up its sleeve. In mid to late spring, it produces clusters of small, white, bell-shaped flowers. These dangle from the branches like little lanterns, creating a beautiful contrast with the red new growth and dark green older leaves.

This Pieris is perfect for adding structure and year-round interest to UK gardens. It works well in shrub borders, woodland gardens, or as a focal point in a container. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller spaces or urban gardens.

‘Mountain Fire’ is a bit fussy about its growing conditions, but get these right and it’s a real gem. It loves acidic soil and, like its rhododendron cousins, it won’t thrive in lime-rich areas. But don’t worry if you have alkaline soil – it grows happily in a pot filled with ericaceous compost.

This shrub is a great choice for wildlife-friendly gardens too. Its flowers are a hit with bees and other pollinators. Plus, the dense evergreen growth provides good shelter for birds and small animals all year round.

Whether you’re looking to add a pop of colour, create a focal point, or bring some structure to a shady corner, Pieris japonica ‘Mountain Fire’ is a brilliant choice. It’s a plant that keeps on giving, offering something new to enjoy in every season.

Plant ‘Mountain Fire’ in partial shade in moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and don’t let the soil dry out completely. Feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Protect from harsh winds and late frosts. In areas with alkaline soil, grow in containers with ericaceous compost.
