The Stone Pine – Pinus pinea, also known as the Italian Stone Pine, is a proper Mediterranean charmer that’ll have you feeling like you’re on holiday in your own garden. This evergreen takes its sweet time growing, eventually reaching a respectable 15-25 metres tall with a crown that spreads out like a giant parasol. The bark’s a right character, thick and craggy, turning a lovely reddish-brown as it gets on in years. Its needles are long chaps, about 10-20 cm, growing in pairs to form a dense, dark green canopy that’s just the ticket for a bit of shade on a scorching day.
The real showstoppers are the whopping oval cones, which take a good three years to ripen. Crack them open, and you’ll find those coveted pine nuts that foodies go potty for. Don’t get your hopes up for a quick crop, though; these trees don’t start producing until they’re about 20 years old, the slackers. They’re tough cookies, mind you, handling seaside winds and dry spells like pros once they’re settled. In our neck of the woods, they’re happiest in the milder southern parts, where they make a right statement in generous gardens or parks.
