The Stone Pine – Pinus pinea, also called the Umbrella Pine, is a right cracking tree that’ll transport you straight to the Med. This evergreen beauty grows at its own pace, eventually reaching 15-25 metres tall with a crown that spreads out like a giant brolly. The bark’s thick and gnarly, turning a lovely reddish-brown as it ages. Its needles are long, about 10-20 cm, growing in pairs to form a dense, dark green canopy that’s perfect for lounging under on a hot day.

The real stars of the show are the massive oval cones, which take their sweet time – three years – to mature. Inside, you’ll find those tasty pine nuts that foodies go mad for. Mind you, you’ll need patience if you’re after a nutty harvest; these trees don’t start producing until they’re about 20 years old. They’re tough old things, handling coastal winds and drought like champs once they’re settled in. In our neck of the woods, they’re happiest in the milder southern parts, where they make a proper statement in big gardens or parks.

Plant your Stone Pine in full sun and well-drained soil. It prefers sandy or gravelly soils and doesn’t tolerate waterlogged conditions. Once established, it’s very drought-tolerant and requires little watering. Pruning is generally unnecessary except to remove dead or damaged branches. Be aware that this tree needs plenty of space to develop its full, characteristic shape. In colder areas of the UK, it may benefit from some protection from harsh winter winds, especially when young.
