Stone Pine Trees
Pinus pinea
Stone Pine – Pinus pinea brings Mediterranean character to UK gardens with its distinctive umbrella-shaped crown and rich green needles. This architectural pine develops an instantly recognizable silhouette with age.
Young trees start with a pyramidal form before developing their characteristic broad, flat-topped canopy. The thick, orange-brown bark develops deep fissures, creating an attractive contrast with the long, dark green needles held in pairs. These needles, typically 10-15cm long, create a dense canopy that casts beautiful dappled shade.
While slower-growing in the UK than in its native Mediterranean, it makes an excellent specimen tree for larger gardens, particularly in sheltered, sunny positions. Its tolerance of coastal conditions makes it ideal for maritime gardens.
Best suited to well-drained soils in full sun, Stone Pine appreciates protection from harsh winds while establishing. In maturity, it creates a striking focal point and can produce large cones containing edible pine nuts in warmer UK locations.
