Coast Redwood – Sequoia sempervirens is one of the most impressive conifers you can plant, and this young specimen supplied at 100/120cm in a P9T pot gives you the chance to grow the world’s tallest tree species from an early, manageable stage. Native to the fog belt of northern California and southern Oregon, it has adapted remarkably well to the mild, damp conditions found across much of Britain, where some of the finest examples outside its homeland now grow.
The foliage is soft and feathery, arranged in flat sprays of narrow needles roughly 15–20mm long. Each needle is a deep green above with two pale silvery bands beneath, giving the whole tree a gentle two-tone shimmer when the branches move in the wind. Unlike many conifers, coast redwood is pleasant to brush past, with none of the prickliness of spruce or juniper. The bark is the real signature feature: thick, fibrous and spongy to the touch, developing a rich cinnamon-red colour that deepens with age and fissures into vertical ridges. It is naturally fire-resistant and warm in appearance, particularly striking in low winter sunlight.
Young trees grow with a narrow, conical outline and a strong central leader, broadening slowly into a towering column. Growth can be rapid once established, often 60–90cm a year in sheltered, moist ground. Coast redwood also has the unusual habit of producing basal shoots and burls, so it can regenerate from the base if the top is damaged. It suits large gardens, parkland, estate planting, shelter belts and arboretums, and it makes a fine specimen or memorial tree. Cones are small, only 2–3cm across, ripening from green to woody brown.
Care Guide
Plant in autumn or early spring while the soil is workable and still warm. Choose a site with deep, moisture-retentive but free-draining soil; slightly acidic to neutral ground suits it best, though it tolerates a wide range provided it does not dry out. Western and southern parts of Britain, with higher rainfall and humid air, produce the strongest growth, but redwoods succeed in most regions given a sheltered position away from cold, drying easterly winds and frost pockets.
Dig a hole twice the width of the rootball, tease out any circling roots and plant at the same depth as in the pot. Firm in well and water thoroughly. Stake young trees for the first two or three years on exposed sites. Apply a 7–10cm mulch of composted bark or leaf mould over the root zone each spring, keeping it clear of the trunk, to conserve moisture and suppress competing grass.
Water generously during the first three summers, especially in dry spells, as young redwoods resent drought. A balanced slow-release feed in spring will support vigorous growth on poorer soils. Pruning is rarely needed; simply remove dead or crossing branches in late winter and protect the leading shoot, as damage to it can spoil the classic spire shape. Fully hardy, and largely untroubled by pests and diseases.

With regret, we can no longer send items out to Northern Ireland. All live plants need a phytosanitary checks and DAERA must be notified. This process is simply too expensive at the moment.
