Coast Redwood – Sequoia sempervirens is the tallest tree species on earth, and this young specimen is supplied at 40/60cm in a P9 pot, ready to be grown on or planted into its permanent position. Despite its towering reputation in its native California and Oregon, it settles readily into the mild, damp conditions found across much of Britain, where it has been grown successfully since the mid-nineteenth century.

The foliage is soft to the touch, made up of flattened needles arranged in two neat ranks along the shoots. New growth emerges a fresh apple green in spring before deepening to a rich dark green with silvery-blue undersides. Unlike the deciduous Metasequoia, Coast Redwood is evergreen, holding its colour through winter and providing year-round structure and shelter. The bark is perhaps its most appealing feature as the tree matures: thick, fibrous and cinnamon-red, spongy enough to press with a thumb and deeply furrowed with age.

Growth is rapid once the root system establishes, with vigorous young trees often putting on 60cm to 1 metre a year in favourable sites. This makes Coast Redwood a practical choice for screening on larger plots, for parkland planting, or as a single specimen given plenty of room. It also responds well to cutting back, resprouting from the stump and from burls at the base, which is unusual among conifers and useful if a tree needs to be reduced.

A sheltered, moist site suits it best. Coastal western counties, Welsh valleys and the milder parts of Scotland replicate its native fog belt closely, though it performs well inland wherever soil moisture is reliable. Avoid exposed, frost-prone hollows and thin chalky soils.

Care Guide

Plant between October and April while the soil is workable, choosing a position in full sun or light dappled shade with shelter from cold, drying easterly winds. Coast Redwood prefers a deep, moisture-retentive but free-draining loam that is neutral to slightly acidic; it tolerates clay if drainage is improved with grit and organic matter, but dislikes shallow chalk.

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, tease out any circling roots and plant at the same depth the tree sat in its pot. Firm gently, water in thoroughly and mulch with 5/7cm of bark or leaf mould, keeping the material clear of the trunk.

Water generously through the first three summers, particularly during dry spells, as young redwoods suffer quickly from drought. A handful of balanced general fertiliser each spring supports the fast growth rate.

Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing damaged or crossing branches in late winter. Should a competing leader develop, remove the weaker of the two to maintain a single straight trunk. Young trees may be scorched by hard frost in their first couple of winters, so a fleece wrap or sheltered nursery bed is worthwhile until the plant reaches around 1 metre.

Coast Redwood is largely untroubled by pests and diseases in Britain, though rabbits and deer will browse young foliage, so a guard is advisable.

RHS Award of Garden Merit

Our unique tall 9cm pots is a smart strategy for cultivating trees with strong and deep root systems. This practice can lead to healthier and more resilient trees that are better prepared for transplantation and long-term growth in your UK garden.

Promoting Deep Root Development with Tall 9cm Pots:

1. Enhanced Root Growth: Using tall pots, such as 9cm pots, encourages trees to develop a deeper and more extensive root system. The added height of the pot allows the tree’s roots to grow downward, seeking nutrients and water in the lower soil layers.

2. Reduced Root Circling: Traditional, shallower pots can sometimes lead to root circling, where the roots grow in a circular pattern around the pot’s base. This can restrict the tree’s ability to access essential resources. Tall pots mitigate this issue, as roots are less likely to encounter physical barriers that encourage circling.

3. Improved Stability: The additional depth provided by tall pots offers improved stability for young trees. It allows for better anchoring and support, which is particularly important during periods of strong winds or inclement weather.

4. Better Soil Temperature Regulation: Tall pots offer improved insulation for the root system. This can help maintain more stable soil temperatures, protecting the roots from extreme heat or cold. This is crucial for healthy root development, especially in the unpredictable UK climate.

5. Reduced Transplant Shock: When it’s time to transplant a tree from a tall pot into the ground, the deeper root system developed in the tall pot can reduce transplant shock. The tree is better equipped to establish itself in its new environment.

6. Versatility: Tall pots are versatile and can accommodate a wide range of tree species. They are particularly useful for growing trees that have a taproot, which naturally grows deeper.
