Coast Redwood – Sequoia sempervirens is the tallest growing tree species on earth, and this young specimen offers the chance to plant something genuinely long-lived in a garden, parkland setting or large boundary planting. Supplied at 80/100cm in a P9T pot, the tree is already established with a strong central leader and a well-branched, feathery framework, making it straightforward to plant out and quick to settle.
The foliage is what first draws attention. Flat, needle-like leaves are arranged in two neat ranks along the shoots, deep green above with two pale silvery bands beneath, giving the branches a soft, fern-like appearance that stays evergreen through winter. As the tree matures, the bark thickens into a fibrous, deeply furrowed cinnamon-red covering that is soft enough to press with a thumb and highly resistant to fire and decay. Mature trees develop a narrow, conical crown with slightly drooping branch tips, eventually becoming a towering column of foliage.
Native to the fog belt of coastal California and Oregon, the Coast Redwood is well suited to the mild, damp conditions found across much of Britain, particularly in the west and south-west where rainfall is reliable. It grows rapidly once established, often putting on 60/90cm of height a year in favourable conditions, so it needs genuine space rather than a small back garden. It works well as a specimen lawn tree, in an arboretum collection, in shelterbelt planting on larger properties or as a memorial tree marking an occasion.
Care Guide
Plant between October and March while the ground is workable, choosing a sheltered site in full sun or light dappled shade. Deep, moist but free-draining loam is ideal; avoid thin chalk, waterlogged hollows and exposed, windy sites where cold easterly winds can scorch the foliage.
Dig a hole two to three times the width of the root ball and only as deep, loosening the base and sides. Set the tree at the same depth it sat in the pot, backfill with the excavated soil mixed with a little garden compost, firm gently and water in thoroughly. A stake is useful for the first two or three seasons on open sites.
Water generously during the first three summers, especially in dry spells; redwoods dislike drought and will shed inner foliage if the roots dry out. A 7/10cm mulch of bark or leaf mould spread over the root zone each spring conserves moisture and suppresses competition from grass. Keep a turf-free circle around the trunk for the first few years.
Feed in spring with a balanced general fertiliser or a top dressing of well-rotted manure. Pruning is rarely needed and is best avoided beyond removing dead, damaged or crossing shoots in late summer; never cut the leading shoot, as this spoils the natural form. The species is fully hardy across Britain and largely trouble-free, though young trees benefit from protection against rabbits and deer using a spiral guard or mesh.

Our unique tall 9cm pots is a smart strategy for cultivating trees with strong and deep root systems. This practice can lead to healthier and more resilient trees that are better prepared for transplantation and long-term growth in your UK garden.
Promoting Deep Root Development with Tall 9cm Pots:
1. Enhanced Root Growth: Using tall pots, such as 9cm pots, encourages trees to develop a deeper and more extensive root system. The added height of the pot allows the tree’s roots to grow downward, seeking nutrients and water in the lower soil layers.
2. Reduced Root Circling: Traditional, shallower pots can sometimes lead to root circling, where the roots grow in a circular pattern around the pot’s base. This can restrict the tree’s ability to access essential resources. Tall pots mitigate this issue, as roots are less likely to encounter physical barriers that encourage circling.
3. Improved Stability: The additional depth provided by tall pots offers improved stability for young trees. It allows for better anchoring and support, which is particularly important during periods of strong winds or inclement weather.
4. Better Soil Temperature Regulation: Tall pots offer improved insulation for the root system. This can help maintain more stable soil temperatures, protecting the roots from extreme heat or cold. This is crucial for healthy root development, especially in the unpredictable UK climate.
5. Reduced Transplant Shock: When it’s time to transplant a tree from a tall pot into the ground, the deeper root system developed in the tall pot can reduce transplant shock. The tree is better equipped to establish itself in its new environment.
6. Versatility: Tall pots are versatile and can accommodate a wide range of tree species. They are particularly useful for growing trees that have a taproot, which naturally grows deeper.
