The Giant Sequoia Redwood is extremely fast growing evergreen tree, it can put on a significant amount of height every year if given good growing conditions. This tree is a UK cold hardy and can withstand cold winters under heavy snow. Avoid planting in a dry area, as giant sequoias need a sizeable amount of water during the growing season and can die if the roots dry out. Ensure to leave adequate space for eventual growth of a very large tree.

Germination

Soak the seeds in water for a day and cold stratify in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. Plant into a moist soil substrate and be careful not to let the seedlings dry out. For best germination, use a plastic bag with moist paper towel and remove seeds when root begins to show. Germination can be erratic, so sow thinly and prick out the seedlings as they become large enough to handle disturbing the rest of the compost as little as possible.

An alternative method is to sow in pots as above during late summer to early winter then place in a cold frame and let nature
take its course as the seasons change with the seedlings emerging the next spring.

These are the seeds we germinate and grow ourselves for our Redwood nursery.

As always, our seeds are fairly and ethically sourced.

Natural Germination: Giant Redwood seeds typically germinate following fire, which clears the ground and exposes the soil to sun, aiding in germination. In a garden setting, mimic these conditions by sowing the seeds in a well-draining, sunny spot, preferably in early spring.

Artificial Stratification: For artificial germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then mix them with moist sand and store them in a refrigerator for 15-30 days. This process mimics the cold, moist conditions of winter. After stratification, plant the seeds in a light, well-draining soil mix, and maintain a consistent temperature of 18-22°C.

Remember, the germination of Sequoiadendron giganteum seeds can be a lengthy process, requiring patience and consistent care.
