Swamp Cypress – Taxodium distichum is a deciduous conifer with soft, feathery green needles that turn warm russet and copper before falling in autumn. Exceptionally tolerant of wet and waterlogged ground, it does just as well beside ponds and streams as it does in ordinary garden soil. Supplied at 40/60cm in a P9 pot, ready to grow on into a fine specimen tree.

Swamp Cypress – Taxodium distichum is a deciduous conifer of considerable character, valued for its feathery foliage, upright conical shape and remarkable tolerance of wet ground. This young specimen is supplied at 40/60cm in a P9 pot, a practical size for establishing a long-term feature tree or for growing on in a nursery bed before final planting.
Native to the river swamps and floodplains of the southeastern United States, the Swamp Cypress carries soft, linear needles held in two ranks along slender shoots, which gives the branches a light, almost fern-like look. Spring growth emerges a fresh yellow-green, deepens to a soft mid-green through summer, then turns warm russet, foxy orange and copper-brown in autumn before dropping entirely. The bare winter framework reveals fibrous, reddish-brown bark that peels in vertical strips, and a straight central trunk that becomes buttressed and fluted at the base with age.
Few trees handle waterlogged soil as willingly as this one. Planted beside a pond, stream or in a low-lying corner that stays damp through winter, it will grow happily where most trees would fail. Where the roots sit in standing water for long periods, mature trees may produce the curious woody “knees”, or pneumatophores, that rise from the soil around the trunk. It also performs perfectly well on ordinary garden soil that does not dry out severely, making it a versatile choice for larger gardens, parkland planting and estate avenues.
The Swamp Cypress is fully hardy throughout Britain, wind-firm once established and notably untroubled by pests and diseases. Because it comes into leaf late, it escapes most spring frost damage, and the fine foliage casts only light shade, so grass and bulbs can grow beneath it.
Care Guide
Plant between autumn and early spring while the tree is dormant, choosing an open position in full sun for the best autumn colour. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball but no deeper, loosen the sides, and firm the soil well around the roots. Stake young trees on exposed sites for the first two or three years.
Moist to wet soil is ideal, including heavy clay and ground that floods seasonally. On drier, free-draining soils, water generously through the first three summers and every dry spell thereafter, as prolonged drought causes needle scorch and premature leaf drop.
Apply a 5/8cm mulch of composted bark or well-rotted manure over the root area each spring, keeping it clear of the trunk. A general-purpose fertiliser in early spring supports steady growth on poorer soils, though established trees rarely need feeding.
Pruning is seldom necessary. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches in late winter and retain a single leading shoot to maintain the natural conical outline. Small P9 plants benefit from a year or two in a sheltered nursery bed or a larger container before being moved to their permanent position, and should be kept weed-free while young.
