he Western Red Cedar ‘Rogersii’, a cultivar of Thuja plicata, is a splendid evergreen that brings a touch of elegance to any garden. This variety stands out with its golden-yellow foliage, which adds a bright splash of colour year-round. Unlike the species, ‘Rogersii’ is a more compact form, making it suitable for smaller gardens or as a striking hedge. The foliage is arranged in flat, scale-like sprays that give off a pleasant, aromatic scent when crushed.
This cedar grows in a neat, pyramidal shape without much need for pruning, making it a low-maintenance choice for busy gardeners. It’s a hardy tree that copes well with UK weather, including both wet and dry spells. The Western Red Cedar is native to North America, where it has been valued by indigenous peoples for centuries. In the garden, it serves as an excellent backdrop for flowering plants, a privacy screen, or a standalone specimen. Birds often find shelter in its dense foliage, adding wildlife interest to your outdoor space. With its golden hue, ‘Rogersii’ can brighten up shady corners or create a warm contrast against other evergreens.
It’s a tree that looks good all year round, requiring little effort to maintain its attractive appearance.
Western Red Cedar ‘Rogersii’ is a versatile tree that adapts to various conditions in UK gardens. It prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in moist, well-drained soil. However, it’s quite tolerant and can cope with different soil types, including clay. When planting, ensure good drainage and add organic matter to the soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional deep watering during dry spells. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds. This cedar doesn’t require regular pruning, but you can trim it lightly in late spring or early summer to maintain shape if desired. With its easy-going nature, ‘Rogersii’ is a great choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance, attractive evergreen.
