Guelder Rose, also known as Viburnum opulus, is a stunning shrub that adds charm to any garden. This native British plant boasts beautiful white flowers in late spring, followed by clusters of glossy red berries in autumn. The leaves turn a lovely reddish-purple colour in fall, giving your garden a splash of colour throughout the seasons. Guelder Rose is perfect for creating a natural, wildlife-friendly space. It attracts various pollinators and provides food for birds. This hardy shrub is easy to grow and maintain, making it ideal for both new and experienced gardeners. It can be used as a standalone feature or as part of a mixed hedge.

The Guelder Rose has a rich history in British folklore and was once believed to ward off evil spirits. However, its main appeal today lies in its ornamental value and benefits to wildlife. Whether you’re looking to create a cottage garden feel or enhance your existing planting scheme, the Guelder Rose is an excellent choice. It’s versatile, beautiful, and supports local ecosystems. By planting a Guelder Rose, you’re not just improving your garden, but also helping our native wildlife thrive.

Guelder Rose is a low-maintenance shrub that thrives in most soil types. It prefers full sun to partial shade and does well in moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system. After that, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and encourage healthy growth. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote flowering. This hardy plant is generally disease-resistant, but keep an eye out for aphids and treat if necessary. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. With minimal care, your Guelder Rose will flourish and provide year-round interest in your garden.
