‘Isobel’, introduced by Dutch maple specialist Dick van der Maat, is a remarkable variety that brings exceptional colour interest to gardens throughout the growing season.

The spring display is particularly spectacular, with leaves emerging in such bright pink-red tones that the tree is often mistaken for being in bloom. This vibrant spring show makes it a perfect alternative to flowering trees, providing similar impact but with colourful foliage rather than flowers.

As spring progresses, the leaves mature to a rich green, creating a perfect backdrop for the continuing display of pink new growth that appears through summer. This two-tone effect adds depth and interest during the warmer months when many other maples become less distinctive.

The autumn finale is equally impressive, with the foliage transforming into bright orange-red tones. With a moderate growth rate reaching 6-8 feet in 15 years, ‘Isobel’ remains a manageable size for most gardens while still creating significant impact.

This variety is best positioned where it can be easily viewed throughout the seasons, making it perfect for prominent positions near patios, entrances, or along frequently used garden paths. Its changing colours provide constant interest and conversation points.

‘Isobel’ combines the best attributes of Japanese maples – elegant form and stunning seasonal colour changes – in a medium-sized tree that’s perfect for modern gardens.
