Cedrus libani, commonly known as the Cedar of Lebanon, is a magnificent coniferous tree with a rich history and striking appearance. Native to the mountains of the Eastern Mediterranean, this evergreen giant has been revered for millennia, featuring in ancient texts and prized for its timber. In maturity, it forms a broad, flat-topped crown with horizontal branches, creating a distinctive silhouette that commands attention in any landscape. The needles are short, dark green, and arranged in dense clusters on the branches, providing year-round interest and texture.
Young trees have a pyramidal shape, gradually developing the iconic flat-topped form as they age. The bark is dark grey and fissured, adding to the tree’s character. In autumn, large upright cones appear, standing proudly on the upper branches like candles. These cones can take up to two years to mature, eventually disintegrating on the tree to release their winged seeds.
Cedrus libani is renowned for its longevity, with some specimens living for over a thousand years. It’s a slow-growing tree, eventually reaching heights of 25-40 meters in cultivation, though in its native habitat, it can grow even taller. This majestic tree requires space to reach its full potential and is best suited to large gardens, parks, or estates where it can become a focal point for generations to come.
The Cedar of Lebanon holds great cultural and historical significance. It was extensively used in ancient architecture and shipbuilding due to its durable, fragrant wood. The tree is mentioned in numerous religious texts and was once a symbol of power and longevity in the Middle East.
In garden settings, Cedrus libani creates a strong architectural presence. Its evergreen foliage provides structure and winter interest, while its broad canopy offers welcome shade in summer. The tree also has value for wildlife, with birds nesting in its dense branches and small mammals finding shelter beneath its sprawling lower limbs.
Plant your Cedar of Lebanon in a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH but can tolerate alkaline soils. Ensure the planting site has ample space for the tree’s eventual size. Water regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant. Pruning is generally unnecessary unless you need to remove dead or damaged branches. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring. While generally hardy, protect young trees from severe frost and strong winds.
