Redwood Trees

Redwoods are majestic conifers that bring a touch of primeval grandeur to gardens. This group includes the deciduous Dawn Redwood – Metasequoia glyptostroboides, the towering Coast Redwood – Sequoia sempervirens, and the massive Giant Redwood – Sequoiadendron giganteum. Each offers unique charm, from feathery foliage to massive trunks.

The Dawn Redwood – Metasequoia glyptostroboides is a unique deciduous conifer, once thought extinct until its discovery in China in the 1940s. It offers feathery, lime-green foliage that turns a stunning bronze in autumn before falling. Its rapid growth and elegant, conical shape make it a standout feature in any garden.

The Coast Redwood – Sequoia sempervirens, native to the fog-shrouded coasts of California and Oregon, is famed for its towering height. In their natural habitat, these trees can grow to over 100 metres, though in UK gardens they typically reach more modest, yet still impressive, heights. Their soft, needle-like foliage and reddish-brown, fibrous bark add textural interest to landscapes.

The Giant Redwood – Sequoiadendron giganteum, also known as the Wellingtonia, is renowned for its massive trunk and impressive longevity. While it may not reach its native Sierra Nevada heights in the UK, it still grows into a magnificent, broad-based conical tree. Its blue-green foliage and thick, spongy bark make it a true specimen tree.

In UK gardens, redwoods adapt surprisingly well, though they appreciate shelter from strong winds. They’re relatively fast-growing, adding vertical interest and a sense of scale to landscapes. Their tolerance of pollution makes them excellent choices for urban gardens seeking a grand, natural focal point.
