Caragana arborescens, commonly known as the Siberian Pea Tree, is a hardy and versatile deciduous shrub or small tree native to Siberia and parts of China. When purchased as bare root stock, it offers an economical way to introduce this robust plant to your garden. Typically growing to a height of 4-6 metres, with a similar spread, it forms a densely branched, upright structure. The Siberian Pea Tree is renowned for its ability to thrive in harsh conditions, making it an excellent choice for challenging sites or as a windbreak. In spring, it produces an abundance of bright yellow, pea-like flowers that are not only attractive but also edible and rich in nectar, making them popular with bees and other pollinators. Following the flowers, small seed pods develop, reminiscent of peas, which give the plant its common name.

The foliage of Caragana arborescens consists of delicate, pinnate leaves that are light green in colour, providing a soft, feathery texture to the overall appearance of the plant. In autumn, these leaves turn a warm yellow before falling. As a member of the legume family, this tree has the added benefit of fixing nitrogen in the soil, potentially improving soil fertility in its vicinity. Bare root specimens are typically planted during the dormant season, allowing them to establish a strong root system before the onset of new growth in spring.

Plant bare root Siberian Pea Tree in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. While adaptable to most soil types, it prefers slightly alkaline conditions. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s extremely drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape if desired. This hardy plant rarely requires fertilisation and is generally pest and disease-resistant.

What Are Bare Root Trees?

Bare root trees are young trees sold without soil around their roots during their dormant season. This method of selling trees has been practised for centuries and offers numerous advantages for both gardeners and the environment. Typically available late Autumn to early Spring.

The Bare Root Advantage

Cost-Effective

Bare root trees are typically less expensive than their container-grown counterparts. Without the need for pots, soil, and extensive care during growth, these savings are passed on to you.

Easier to Plant

The absence of soil means bare root trees are lighter and easier to handle. This makes planting a breeze, especially when dealing with larger quantities or varieties.

Quicker Establishment

Counter-intuitively, bare root trees in some instances establish faster than container-grown trees. Their exposed root systems quickly adapt to native soil, developing a robust network that supports rapid growth.

Environmentally Friendly

Bare root trees are a green choice. They require less water during nursery care and transportation, reducing their carbon footprint. Plus, there’s no plastic pot waste!

When to Plant Bare Root Trees

The window for planting bare root trees is limited to their dormant season, typically from late autumn to early spring. This period allows the trees to establish themselves before the demands of new growth in spring.

Planting and Care Tips

  1. Soak roots in water for a few hours before planting
  2. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the spread roots
  3. Plant at the same depth as the soil mark on the stem
  4. Backfill with native soil, firming gently
  5. Water well and mulch around the base
  6. Stake larger trees to provide support

Why Choose Bare Root Trees?

  1. Value for Money: Get more trees for your budget
  2. Wider Selection: Access to a broader range of species and varieties
  3. Better for Transplanting: Less shock to the tree during the planting process
  4. Ideal for Larger Projects: Perfect for hedgerows, orchards, or woodland creation

Environmental Impact

By choosing bare root trees, you’re making a positive impact on the environment. These trees are carbon positive, meaning they absorb more carbon dioxide than is produced in their cultivation and transportation. As they grow, they continue to sequester carbon, improve air quality, and provide habitats for wildlife.

Embrace the bare root revolution and watch your garden flourish with these dormant dynamos. Plant a legacy that will grow for generations to come!
